Greenpeace MENA will also collect information such as your Internet Protocol (IP) address for monitoring and improving the effectiveness of our website services as well its security.

1.3 Cookies

Cookies are small files that are downloaded onto your computer (or your mobile phone) from websites that you visit. Cookies contain information that allows websites to recognise that you have used the site before.

We use cookies, like most websites, to help us provide you with the best experience when you visit our site. Some cookies are crucial to the smooth running of our website – for example our donation pages rely on them. Other cookies allow us to understand (by using tools like Google Analytics) how visitors are interacting with our website, so that we can improve it.

We also use cookies to ensure that any investments we make in online advertising are as cost-effective as possible, by tracking how well individual adverts perform. These cookies are issued by third party service providers that we have assessed as secure. From time to time, we will display adverts on other websites to people who have visited our website before, and the technology behind these adverts is also based on cookies. These cookies, as with all others we use, do not contain information that can personally identify you.

This website also uses Google Analytics Advertising Features to enable us to better understand the interests of our audience and to tailor our communications to be more relevant to you. You can install the “Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on” to prevent information about your visits to our website being sent to Google Analytics.

You may see Greenpeace listed in locations such as in search results or on the Google Display Network.

If you do not wish to see these adverts, you can:

All browsers allow you to control which cookies you accept and which you delete. You will usually find these settings under the ‘Preferences’ or ‘Tools’ menu of your browser. For more information about cookies, please see www.allaboutcookies.org.

2.How your data is kept secure

2.1 What Greenpeace MENA does to keep your data secure

Greenpeace MENA uses industry-standard tools, such as firewalls and Secure Socket Layers, to safeguard the confidentiality of your personally identifiable information. We make every effort to protect against the loss, misuse and alteration of the information under our control.

2.2 Who has access to your data

We will never sell your data to any other organisation. We also never share or swap your data with another organisation.

We do employ some third parties to process data such as to handle donation payments or fundraise for us. In all these cases these third parties only have access to the data they need to handle the process and do not have permission to use it for any other purposes. We may also share anonymised (or ‘hashed’) versions of your data with partners such as social media providers for the purposes of helping achieve our campaigning and fundraising aims, by delivering personalised content to existing supporters and identifying similar audiences. You may opt out of such data sharing at any time by contacting us using the details at the bottom of this policy.

Within Greenpeace MENA, only those authorised to process your data can access your data. We work hard to ensure our staff and volunteers can only see the data they need to perform their tasks. All our staff are trained to understand data protection and what they need to do to keep your data secure.

3.How we use your data

If you subscribe through the form of the website, emails may be sent to you will be receiving updates and alerts by email, instant messaging, push notifications or telephone, according to the contact data you have provided through the form. These will be to inform you of the progress of the Ummah for Earth campaign, to suggest that you participate in future online or offline activities related to the campaign, or to support the allies of this campaign (subscribe to their newsletter, join their events and activities etc.). You are always free to accept or reject all or part of these proposals.

After the end of the “Ummah for Earth” campaign if your country of location is within the Middle East & North Africa region, Greenpeace MENA will continue to send you updates and alerts by email, instant messaging, push notifications or telephone, according to the contact data you have provided through the form.

After the end of the “Ummah for Earth” campaign if your country of location is outside the Middle East & North Africa region, your data will be deleted from the database and that data will never get processed again from Greenpeace MENA, unless it will be made a requirement to retain them by law.

We may use your data to analyze and refine our advertising, campaigning and other operations to increase our effectiveness and lower our costs. In order to ensure our communication with you is relevant, timely and will ultimately provide a better experience for you, we may also build up a profile of you based on the interactions you have had with Greenpeace MENA. Such profiling may include details of your past engagement with Greenpeace MENA together with information gathered from sources detailed elsewhere in this Privacy Policy, and may be carried out either by Greenpeace MENA or by a trusted partner. For example, in deciding who to email about inviting them to an online teach-in in Arabic language, we might look at which supporters have responded to similar invitations in the past and which supporters live in Arab speaking countries. This enables Greenpeace MENA to most effectively target relevant information and appropriate requests for support. This does not affect any of your rights or limit you in how you can get involved with the campaign. You may opt out of profiling at any time by contacting us using the details at the bottom of this policy.

4. How you can change the way Greenpeace MENA communicates with you or unsubscribe

The first time you sign up for the “Ummah for Earth” campaign, you are choosing what type of data you wish to make available for contact. We will not make any changes unless you change them yourself, or contact us to change them on your behalf.

You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time through the unsubscribe link at the end of all our emails, and stop seeing any social media advertising through settings on those sites.

You can also change your mind on how you would like us to contact you or tell us that you would no longer like to hear from us through our preference form, by calling +9611398296 or emailing us via the contact form.

Change your cookies preferences

By removing both cookies described above, we will set a unique cookie to store your preferences – this will allow you to have a tracking-free experience on this website.

Blocking / deleting Cookies

Most browsers allow you to refuse to accept cookies, manage previously accepted ones or delete existing ones on your device. Click your browser type below to go directly to the browser user guide to learn how to disable or erase cookies.

Blocking all cookies will, however, have a negative impact upon the usability of many websites.

Use of Google Analytics

Greenpeace uses Google Analytics to gather visitors’ use of our website and analyze the data to help us maintain and improve the design of our website. Google Analytics generates statistical and other information about website use by means of cookies, which are stored on users’ computers.

Should you not be willing to get the analytics cookies, please change you cookies settings above (‘change your cookies preferences’).

As mentioned before, Google Analytics cookies used in this website are _utma, _utmb, _utmc, _utmz, _ga and _gid – and they all collect information in an anonymous form, including the number of visitors to the site, browser ClientID (to identify returning users, for example), where visitors come to the site from and the pages they visited. Here’s the privacy overview of Google Analytics, the Google Analytics Cookie Usage on Websites and here how to easily opt-out of Google Analytics cookies.

As of May 2018, Google Analytics introduced the Data Retention controls, giving organizations the ability to set the amount of time before user-level and event-level data stored by Google Analytics is automatically deleted from Analytics’ servers.

Such retention period applies to user-level and event-level data associated with cookies, user-identifiers (e.g. User-ID) and advertising identifiers (not applicable in Greenpeace websites anyway). For Greenpeace International, the Data Retention control for Google Analytics is set to 26 months. Once again, Analytics will not collect the internet protocol (IP) address used to connect your device to the internet.

Besides, it is important to mention that Google stores websites traffic information which have Google Analytics tracking code. Check Google’s privacy policy and how to opt-out of Google Analytics cookies.

You can install the “Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on” to prevent information about your visits to our website being sent to Google Analytics.

Use of social networks sharing buttons and widgets

Beside the customized HTML buttons we installed to allow you to share Greenpeace content on Facebook and Twitter, we may embed widgets from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Soundcloud and other social media on our website to provide an enhanced experience.

These social networking  widgets come from web servers which may track your behaviour on our website and may combine this with other information about you originating from other websites. You can install a browser add-ons like “Privacy Badger” for Chrome or “Disconnect” for Chrome and Firefox to control some (the first) or disable them (the second).
