This side-event, titled “Mosques as Sanctuaries of Resilience: Faith-Based Humanitarianism on the Frontlines of Climate Displacement”, was co-organized by Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Global One, Islamic Help, and Islamic Relief UK as members of the Ummah For Earth Alliance.

The panel highlighted a reality: vulnerable populations directly seek refuge in their local Mosques when climate disasters strike. The speakers explored how houses of worship can be systematically transformed into climate-resilient, solar-powered humanitarian hubs that provide clean energy, filtered water, and long-term green livelihoods for climate-displaced populations.

Key Insights from the side-event

Greenpeace MENA’s Green Mosques In climate itiative report proves that equipping these places of worship with solar power and sustainable microgrids keeps vital lifelines. As a result, Mosques are capable of isolating themselves immediately from the failed outside infrastructure and existing as independent crisis centers that keeps communities physically and economically anchored.

Using real climate displacement data gathered by Islamic Help, including their unique initiative of creating a Children’s Eco-Village in Tanzania, the panel examined the role that faith-based structures play in being the very first responders during humanitarian crises.

Global One detailed how Green Mosques can host long-term post-displacement training and livelihood programmes with a particular focus on women. Drawing on their on-the-ground experience running women’s livelihood cooperatives across Kenya, Nigeria, and Bangladesh, they showcased how faith-aligned, community-led models can be replicated in climate-vulnerable regions worldwide.

Islamic Relief UK highlighted how localized climate adaptation can bridge domestic action and global relief, focusing on their Greening My Mosque toolkit. By sharing key learnings from their international work including climate-adaptive farming, drought-resistant crops, and building solarization, the organization explored how these global strategies can be adapted locally.

Panelists argued that Mosques as community resilience hubs is the kind of solution that can be a fully integrated, highly scalable model. There are over 3.6 million mosques worldwide. If even a fraction of these institutions are transformed into solar-powered, circular eco-sanctuaries, we create an unstoppable, decentralized global web of climate resilience.

At a side-event during London Climate Action Week 2026, Ummah For Earth Alliance called on the globalcommunities to rethink disaster response, presenting the case for transforming houses of worship, specifically…

"p4_og_title":"","p4_og_description":"","p4_og_image":"","p4_og_image_id":"","p4_seo_canonical_url":"","p4_campaign_name":"Ummah for Earth","p4_local_project":"","p4_basket_name":"","p4_department":"

35
],"p4-page-type":[
post-14650","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ummah-for-earth-en
["GET
