The global community is currently facing an unprecedented climate crisis, and some of the most climate-impacted people live in Muslim countries. Facing this crisis requires a multifaceted approach and collective action.

These synchronised climate efforts are limited on a local scale. As community and faith leaders, Imams can play a powerful role in advancing these efforts, bringing together Muslim communities and diverse stakeholders.

How can Imams achieve that?

Environmental education is the key to producing leaders who care and are responsible for the environment. Islamic-based environmental materials that are integrated within the Higher religious education curriculum of Imams can strengthen the understanding and commitment of prospective faith leaders in protecting the environment and guiding their communities.

Despite its potential, Islamic Higher Education remains underutilised in the context of environmental  work

Muslim Education & Climate Change in the MENA Region Research Results

A Research was conducted by Ummah For Earth Ally, Dr. Odeh Al-Jayyousi, to provide a situation analysis of the Islamic curriculum in selected universities in the MENA region with the faculty of Sharia and assess the level of mainstreaming of environmental education in them.

The main findings concluded that Imams are mostly exposed to academic religious education, few elective courses include environmental materials, and finally Environment is not mainstreamed in the academic curriculum.
