What do you know about the Islamic Declaration on Climate Change?

On 18 August 2018, the Islamic Declaration on Climate Change was announced during the International Islamic Climate Change Symposium in Turkey. This declaration was developed jointly by a group of Muslim scholars, academics, faith leaders and environmentalists including several Ummah for Earth alliance members.

How was it developed?

The IFEES/EcoIslam and the Islamic Relief WorldWide teamed up in 2014 and started pushing towards this initiative. After some initial research a first draft was created by May 2015 and shared worldwide on the websites of IFEES/EcoIslam, Islamic Relief Worldwide, Climate Action Network and the Forum on Religion and Ecology. The efforts continued until a synthesis draft was discussed during the International Islamic Climate Change Symposium where the Declaration was launched.

“A mercy to all beings”

The Islamic Declaration on Climate Change calls on Muslims worldwide to engage in global climate movement and to tackle “environmental degradation and the loss of biodiversity”.

The declaration aims to educate billions of Muslims about the significant impacts of climate change, and considers that the implementation of sustainable solutions is a moral and religious duty.

In the declaration, faith leaders called for zero emissions and reiterated the need for clean energy sources for a sustainable future for everyone.
